PORT JERVIS — The city is one step closer to resurrecting the former Save-A-Lot on Jersey Avenue, which was the only major grocery store in Port Jervis.
The state has approved a $143,000 grant to the Port Jervis Community Development Agency, which has promised $128,000 of the grant for a low-interest loan to Chad Goetz, who is trying to revive the store. The remaining $15,000 will go to the CDA for administrative costs and program delivery.
The CDA will combine the state grant with $120,000 of city money for the loan. The city is still trying to recover $300,000 in CDA loan money from a former owner of Save-A-Lot, which closed in December 2008. It was evicted for nonpayment of rent. The reopening of Save-A-Lot is expected to create 22 jobs.

Here we go again, round 2. Driving past the SavALot was always a commical ride, never knew if someone would be physically slugging it out in the parking lot! And the jobs the store is creating ... WOW! the qualification for these jobs is, you have to be on social services.

This is nothing more but a handout. It is not a real business. A real business owner sits down with the banker, hammers out a plan, puts his/her credit on the line. They invest their own money, not money belonging to the taxpayer.

SavALot is nothing more but a government store ... a step in the socialist direction.

And as far as all the empty buildings in PJ ... well, the median income is $16,000; 55% of the residential properties are rentals. Private homeownership in PJ is on the decline. Port Jervis is a depressed community and will continue to be so until the governing body ceases their dependency on Albany. All they know is, revenue, revenue, revenue ... how much will we get from Albany ... can anyone call our Assemblyman or Senator? Maybe they have some money ...

All in all, Port Jervis is doing a wonderful job at killing the community ... what a legacy they are leaving. What does power bring? ...

And I know very well how nice Port Jervis was many years ago. Maybe I'll donate my house to one of the Churches, enjoy the tax write off and say, hasta la vista baby!

Hey - last one out of Port Jervis, turn off the lights please!

Well, the decision has been made and there are grant dollars coming to PJ for the Save-A-Lot store. I hope Mr.Goetz hires a somewhat better manager this time, and that the store will have competitive prices with area supermarkets.

I have posted videos of the recent events at the Council and CDA relating to this on my website at http://www.pjthirdward.info/current.html

You may e-mail me through the site with any questions or concerns you may have on this project.

Thanks.

I agree with you Lysol, but Save A Lot is not the answer. First you need a store that can stand on its own to feet. Hand outs just tells me your starting off at a weak point to begin with. Secondly, Save a Lot wasnt much of a store to begin with. The quality of the foods that they sold were sub poor. Family Dollar next door sold better food products at a better price.

If Save A Lot opened without any hand outs,I would be all for it.

I love a good laugh in the morning.....

Lets try this again...lol.. I will go slow this time for you Baron.

You can scroll back and reread my post. Stay with me. I'm talking about the waste of money that is going to be spent on Save A Lot. The empty store fronts in PJ is another topic I didnt post about, but will if you want me to.

Now about my "lack of experience" in commercial real estate... I have no clue what your talking about when you stated... "There are the way things are done it is how they are done which becomes problematic in certain instances." Hmmmm I'm truly clueless how things are done for you as an experience commercial real estate person. The law is the law... Port Jervis doesnt make up the rules... Albany does. So your theory about "being shaked down" is just adding to the BS you post and adds to the forum here. If you or anyone else that has been shaken down, oh well. As someone with so much information you have, you should know a good lawyer would solve your so called "shake down"....LOL

I will gladly keep correcting you misleading post that you do. Take care...lol

Port Person, the fact remains that there are too many empty buildings. Ask anyone involved in the business and you will understand why this is a very bad situation.

As for your other comments about calling newspapers, Fortune 500, and the rest. I take it from this you have no experience with commercial real estate and very little understanding of business in general. There are the way things are done it is how they are done which becomes problematic in certain instances.

And as for the comment about the other site? You have also misunderstood this. My objection was towards a person who asked a question here and was told by someone they would receive an answer elsewhere. I said that they should have responded to the person here, which was where the person asked the question.

The fact that you misunderstand this and also have a history of meaningless postings where you engaged in useless personal exchanges says enough about you.

The funding of the store has nothing to do with the present day taxi service that is now in place for seniors. If you back track, the issue is the waste of money that will be spent on over size convenient store.

Your saying years ago developers where looking to build in PJ and were "shook down". I find that funny. Since you have first had info about this, why didnt you email or make a phone call to the local news paper of this info?? Hmmm You would have been a savoir of the city knowing this...lol. Was it a Major Fortune 500 company?

This store shouldn't open period. If a large grocery chain wants to come in without hand outs and grants, sure. But not this joke store.

I find it juvenile that a person with a bunch screen names trying to push people over to his site comical.

With alittle work... its easy to see that one person with a bunch of screen names continues to post on here attempting to push people on his site... each post leaves an ISP number that come from the same address...that info will be for another day...lol

The issue of the store should have nothing to do with funding a taxi service for seniors. This is a separate issue. It is something which should be addressed, but as it stands there is nothing in place for anyone.

Years ago there were developers who were looking to major site work and were met with the kind of shakedown common in bigger cities. It works in the larger metropolitan area because the CBA has in essence taken this into effect. In a small town it does not work as well.

The store should move forward, and the other issue should be addressed also, but they should not be tied in together.

And I think it is juvenile to respond to someones inquiry with I will not answer here. I will answer some where else. If you decide not to participate in this conversation that is perfectly legitimate, but your response is little more than a polite form of the actions which have been going on for quite a while here.

This sort of mentality is why this forum has deteriorated.
